Lost University class videos — Egyptian hieroglyphics

Lost University HIS 101

Lost University HIS 101

I’ve been trying to find a way to watch the Lost University class videos without having to get a Blu-ray player. It didn’t seem possible. For a while, fans were posting them on YouTube, but Disney was pulling them down almost as fast as the fans could put them up.

But I just stumbled across a stash of the videos. I don’t know how long they will be available, so enjoy them while you can.

The two below are for the history class HIS 101 “Ancient Writing on the Wall,” which deals with Egyptian hieroglyphics (literally, “sacred script”) — the pictures we’ve seen so much of on the Island, that represent both ideas and sounds.

In the first class, Dr. Kara Cooney — Assistant Professor of Egyptian Art and Architecture at UCLA, LOST’s hieroglyphic consultant, museum curator, and major excavation team member — talks about Egyptian civilization, how hieroglyphics were used in temples and tombs, secret magical texts, and why these ancient artifacts must be preserved.

In the second class, Eric Wells, Ph.D. student of Egyptology at UCLA, discusses the meaning of some common signs (symbols) that we may actually have seen in LOST, including the ankh and bird signs. He also talks about how to read hieroglyphs, and how the writing evolved.

Official video podcast: Good versus evil

In this video podcast, Damon, Carlton, Matthew Fox (Jack), Terry O’Quinn (Locke and notLocke), Jorge Garcia (Hurley), and Josh Holloway (Sawyer) talk about the sideways flashes and about some of the large questions of the season.

The most interesting things said on the video:

On the timelines

Carlton said the two timelines are related, and the way in which they are related is one of the big mysteries of this season.

On good versus evil

Damon said that it’s all about good versus evil, and we will have to decide if Jacob is the good guy and the Man in Black the bad guy, or if they have done a “switcheroo.” Both Jacob and the MiB are going to get a chance to make their case.

Carlton echoed that it comes down to good versus evil.

My theory had been that the show wasn’t going to draw clear lines between good characters and evil characters, but instead show something more ambiguous, with characters who were neither totally good nor totally bad, but instead a mixture of both. Going from what Darlton said here, it appears that may not be the case.

We shall see.

Jorge Garcia does a podcast based on the script

Beth (Sidekick22) and Jorge Garcia (Hurley)

Beth (Sidekick22) and Jorge Garcia (Hurley)

This is funny. Jorge Garcia (Hurley) and his girlfriend Beth (Bethany James Leigh Shady, aka Sidekick22) made a podcast last summer based on their reading of the script for “LA X.”

They were trying to figure out what was going on, and they kept on saying things like “I don’t get it, I don’t get it.” “Wait, what?” Hah.

This is the first podcast in a series. You can listen to it here: Jorge Garcia podcasts 6×01-02.

For future installments, take a look at the blog they set up just to distribute the podcast: Geronimo Jack’s Beard.

Also check out Beth’s personal blog, and if you haven’t seen it already, Jorge’s.

The Official LOST Audio Podcast — rehash “LA X” and prehash “What Kate Does”

Damon and Carlton

First audio podcast of the season. Damon and Carlton discuss:

— The space in the title “LA-space-X.” They’re not telling us what it means.

— What are the flash sideways? They’re not telling us what they mean either. Hah.

— Why they are not calling the flash sideways “alternate realties.” Or Bizarro World, for that matter.

— What are we to make of the differences between what happened on the plane in the flash sideways, and what happened when we originally saw it in the flashbacks?

They sort of answered this one! Detonating a bomb might have created changes other than the ones that Faraday anticipated. After all, if stepping on a butterfly can cause all sorts of unanticipated effects, then dropping a nuclear bomb on that butterfly could cause even more.

— Why does Jack seem to recognize Desmond on the plane? Was Sun lying when she said she didn’t know English? Carlton says he doesn’t know. 😉

Oh, here’s something very interesting –> Damon says:

You think that not that many things have changed, but a lot more things have changed than you probably think. And that’s going to be the exploration of the season.

Hmmmm.

Then they do a tiny bit of prehashing of 6×03 “What Kate Does”:

— The episode title corresponds to a previous one, What Kate Did (2×09).

And they answer fan questions. You can send your own to lostfanquestions@abc.com.

You can listen to the whole podcast here: LOST Podcasts (it’s the one dated Feb. 4, 2010), or on iTunes.

LOST Schedule for February 9, 2010

Alt Kate

Here’s the schedule for the next episode in the U.S.:

Tuesday, Feb. 9 on ABC:

8:00 — A rerun of part 2 of “LA X.” This is going to be the enhanced version, with the sometimes obvious, but sometimes helpful pop-up hints. (It doesn’t look like they are going to be rerunning part 1, at least not this week.)

9:00 — The new episode, 6×03 “What Kate Does.” ABC’s description:

Kate finds herself on the run; Jack must do something that may endanger a friend’s life.

Showings, as always, will be an hour earlier for Central Time.

Screencap of alt Kate is from the sneak peek of episode 6×03.

Promos for 6×03 from the U.S. and the U.K.

Both of these contain footage from the upcoming episode.
