The numbers … the winning lottery ticket … “Touch” gave me LOST deja vu

The Touch pilot was LOST-like in several ways, with its mysteries, its eerie connections between characters, its explicit mention of fate and destiny and, especially, the way it ripped off (or paid homage to) the LOST numbers — not the exact numbers, of course, but the general idea of them. It’s even got a LOST alumnus — Titus Welliver (the Man in Black) in a crucial guest role (hat tip to Geri in the comments for recognizing Welliver).

So far, so good, though I don’t know if the rest of the series can sustain the level of the pilot. I doubt it will reach LOST’s heights — for one thing, the character development in the Touch pilot was relatively thin compared to the rich character development immediately apparent in LOST’s pilot — though Kiefer Sutherland’s acting skills go a long way to mitigate whatever character flatness lies in the script.

I wonder if we will be seeing other shows in the future that use other elements of LOST.

By the way, this is only the second television series I’ve seen (the first being Person of Interest) where 9/11 is an important part of a character’s backstory.

I’m cautiously hopeful about Touch. I enjoyed the pilot and hope that the show builds on its intriguing premises, though I’m not sure where they can take it from here without becoming repetitive.

  1. Finally got to view the pilot of “Touch” and I loved it. Has anyone mentioned Titus Welliver, the actor playing the lottery ticket purchaser and man on the phone at the airport, is the actor who played the Man in Black in Lost. He has been showing up on quite a few of the USA and TNT series.
