LOST-related Events at San Diego Comic-Con 2010

Daniel Dae Kim will be starring in the reimagined version of Hawaii Five-0

Comic-Con 2010 is this week. While there won’t be the kind of LOST panel that we’ve seen in the past, there will be plenty of events featuring LOST actors, writers, and fans.

Here’s the schedule. Twitter will be a good bet for live coverage.

Thursday, July 22, 2010

4:30-5:30 LOST’s composing genius Michael Giacchino will be a member of the panel in Behind the Music with CW3PR: Composing for Sci-Fi, Horror, and Fantasy Film & TV.

Friday, July 23, 2010

10:15-11:15 Daniel Dae Kim (Jin) will be on the panel Aloha, Earth! discussing the remake of Hawaii Five-0. Kim was the first actor cast for the show (he will play Detective Chin Ho Kelly), which also stars Alex O’Loughlin (Moonlight), Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica), and Jean Smart (Martha Logan on 24). The show will start in the fall on CBS.

7:30-8:30 30 Days of Night: Dark Days This panel is for a movie based on a graphic novel, starring Kiele Sanchez, who played the ill-fated Nikki Fernandez (as in, Nikki and Paulo) in LOST’s most hated sub-plot. Wishing her better luck in her new role.

Saturday, July 24, 2010

1:00-2:00 The Write Stuff: Creating Genre Television. Among the 11 writers on the panel are two from LOST — Javier Grillo-Marxuach and Jesse Alexander. This looks like a very interesting event. As does the next one:

1:00-2:00 The Lost Podcast with Jay and Jack. Here’s the official description: “Father and son team Jay and Jack Glatfelter have one of the oldest and biggest podcasts dedicated to ABC’S Lost. Discuss the stirring series finale, and learn about the huge dedicated online community for TV’s most mind-twisting drama. Join Jay and Jack for this special interview and Q&A session!”

2:30-3:15 V Screening and Q&A with, of course, Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet). V will be coming back in the middle of the fall season.

4:15-5:00 The Vampire Diaries Screening and Q&A with Ian Somerhalder (Boone). Vampire Diaries will be back in the fall.

This one may be the most LOST-centric event of all:

6:00-7:00 Lost But Not Forgotten Official description: “Lost Encyclopedia authors Tara Bennett and Paul Terry, along with other special Lost guests, discuss this seminal show’s legacy, their thoughts on the finale, and the creation of the forthcoming Lost Encyclopedia.”

Sunday, July 25, 2010

11:15-12:15 Cartoon Network: Tower Prep with Firebreather Sneak Paul Dini, the creator of this new live-action mystery show, was a writer and story editor on LOST.

Editing to add: I just noticed that JOpinionated has a list that includes these events I missed: Sterling Beaumon (Young Ben) and Andrea Gabriel (Nadia) signing autographs; a Friday night casual get-together with Jay & Jack; executive producers/writers Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis on a panel on Thursday 11:15 to 12:45; Michelle Rodriguez (Ana Lucia) on a panel Thursday 1 to 2; J.J. Abrams on a panel Thursday 3:30 to 4:30; Elizabeth Mitchell on two more panels in addition to the V panel listed above (Friday 4-5 and 6:30-7:30); and Lance Reddick, who played my favorite non-starring character (Matthew Abaddon), in a Fringe panel on Saturday 3:15 to 4:15 .

Deleted scene from 5×09 Namaste, with Juliet and Miles

Juliet is looking for Sawyer. She asks Miles, down in the security office, if he’s seen him. Miles turns on the video monitors, and there, in black-and-white, they see — The Visitors! Oh no! Lizard people! Run!

I keeed, I keeed. Just watch:

I like ‘V’ better than ‘FlashForward’

While there’s only been one episode of V so far, I’m already liking it better than FlashForward, the other show with a LOST alum as a star. I thought V had more interesting characters (the teenagers, in particular, I thought were very well done), better production values (the inside of the ship was cool), better dramatic conflicts, better dialogue, and hints of some intriguing themes.

It’s no LOST (even if they did have a guy who got out of a wheelchair), but so far, it looks good.

What do you think? Which science-fiction show, with an FBI investigation, starring a blonde LOST actress, do you prefer?

Editing to add 8/17/10: After the haitus, I thought FlashFoward got much better, and by the end, I was sorry that it was canceled. I wanted to see more. I thought V, on the other hand, went downhill in the spring. So I’ve changed my mind completely about both shows. This was one case where first impressions were not accurate!

Elizabeth Mitchell liked seeing Sawyer and Kate together

Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays Juliet, one corner of the Sawyer-Kate-Jack-Juliet love quadrangle, said that she liked seeing Sawyer with Kate.

This came up during an interview at Comic-Con, published today in Movieline:

I had always liked Sawyer with Kate! I mean, not to be a fangirl — which I am — but I just really actually liked them together. I liked their chemistry, their passion.

I can’t argue with that!

She also said that she was leery, at first, of the peacefulness of Juliet and Sawyer’s relationship. Like most of us, she was suprised by how satisfying it became to watch that relationship blossom:

[Juliet became] [h]appy and not as complex, do you know what I mean? She and Sawyer had found this kind of peace that I fought very hard against and Josh fought very hard against, and we were so wrong, which is really nice. When I watched it, I liked it, and I don’t usually like anything I do.

… What I didn’t anticipate is how Josh would play it and how he made it so honest and so happy and so real. When I was watching him, I was like, “That’s why that relationship works.”

One thing that Kate-and-Sawyer and Juliet-and-Sawyer have in common is that both couples had kissing scenes which became instant classics:

In the fifth segment of “Ask Lost,” Elizabeth Mitchell tells us that she would enjoy playing the part of Sayid, and that it was easy for her to slip into Juliet’s “whole creepy thing.”

Can Jack change the future?

This official video podcast, the last of the season, shows clips of Kate and Jack from 5×15 Follow the Leader, and also the key moments of the scene from 5×14 The Variable where Faraday says that they themselves are the variables.

Evangeline Lilly says it feels good for Kate to disagree with Jack.

Matthew Fox says that Jack believes that detonating the bomb has always been his destiny, and that completing his destiny is his only salvation.

Elizabeth Mitchell says she loves the theory that dropping pebbles in water changes nothing, but dropping boulders changes the course of the whole river. This is interesting, because she is referring to a part of Faraday’s scene which we didn’t actually see. Damon and Carlton said, in one of their audio podcasts, that the pebble/boulder bit, an analogy for how Faraday thought he could change time, was in the original script for the Faraday scene, but had to be cut because the scene was running too long.
